Clinical studies were done on 107 peoples(96 males, 11 females) chosen from 1150 who were treated with the auricular acupuncture therapy to stop smoking in the Dept. of the Acupuncture and Moxibution, Hospital of Oriental Medicine in Won Kwang University during one month , from November 1,1991 to November 30, 1991.
The following results have obtained.
1. Distribution of sex:male(89.7%), female(10.3%)
2. In the distribution of age:60s age group(28.0%), 40s(26.2%), 50s(20.6%), 20s(10.3%), 30s(7.5%), 70s(6.5%), l0s(0.9%)
3. Distribution of occupation in descending order:office worker(28.0%), unemployed person(23.4%), businessman(15.0%), laboar man(12.1%), students (11.2%), housewife(10.3%)
4. Distribution of the reason to stop-smoking in descending order:for health(83.1%), inducement(14.0%), study(1.8%), education of stop-smoking(0.9%)
5. Distribution of starting times to smoking in descending order:20s(59.8%), l0s(26.1%), 30s(8.4%), 40s(5.6%)
6. Distribution of duration in descending order:20-29 years(28.0%),30-39 years, 30-39years(23.3%), 40-49years(15.8%), 10-19years(14.0%), 1-9years(12.1%), over 50years(6.5%)
7. The result of stop-smoking during one year:male(success-23.9%, failure-76.1%), female (success-0.9%, failure-99.1%)
8. Distribution of smoking amount (1 day) in descending order:11-20 cigarettes (56.1%), 21-30 cigarettes (24.3%), 31-40 cigarettes (7.5%), 1-10 cigarettes, over 41 cigarettes were each 6.5%. Quantum of smoking for 1 day in last stop smoking treatment by the auricular acupuncture:no smoking(61.7%),1-5 cigarettes(29.0%), 5-10 cigarettes (5.6%), 10-15 cigarettes(3.7%).
9. Distribution of disease within smoking in desending order:respiratory disease (55.6%), G-I tract disease (20.4%), circulatory disease (5.6%), headache, eye disease, decrease of weight were each 3.7%, liver disorder, diabetes, neuralgia, spiritless were each 1.9%.
10. Distribution in change of cigarettes taste after the auricular acupuncture treatment:insipid(46.7%), bitter(18.6%), tasting bad(74.1%), grassy odored(5.6%), feel sick(0.9%), unchanged(13.0%)
11. Desire to smoke after the auricular acupuncture treatment:the decrease(80.3%), unchanged(19.6%).
12. Past experiences to stop smoking: Yes(57.0%), No(42.9%) The success rate accordant with the past temporary experiences shows that the cases with experience is higher than the ones without experience.
13. Tence of stop-smoking in the failure who didn,t success stop-smoking for 1 year:under 1 week(50.6%), 1-4 weeks(12.0%), 1-2 month(22.8%), 3-4 month, 5-6 month were each 7.2%.
14. Distribution of the motive to smoking in descending order(failure of stop-smoking):habit(28.9%), desire(22.8%), stress(13.2%), inducement(9.6%), solitude, pleasure were each 7.2%, increase of weight(4.8%), smoking environment(3.6%), drinking, authority of male were each 1.2%.
15. Decreaseing degree of smoking quantum(failure of stop-smoking) : 1-10 cigarettes(41.0%),11-20 cigarettes(8.4%), 21-30 cigarettes(2.4%), 31-40 cigarettes, increase of cigarettes were each 1.2%, unchanged(45.8%).
16. The total rate in times of treatments in descending order : 3times(23.4%), 2times, 4times were each 21.5%, 5times(15.0%), 6times(4.7%), 7times(8.4%), 8times(4.7%), 9times(0.9%).
The success rate in times of treatments in descending order: 4times(29.1%), 2times(25.0%), 3times (20.8%), 5times(8.3%).
The number of successful stop-smoking treatment in descending order (complete recovered man) 1time(62.5%), 2times(20.8%), 3times, 4times were each 8.3%.
17. Opinion of stop-smoking treatment by acupuncture : excellent(21.4%), good(4-5.7%), fair(20.5%), failure(12.1%).
18. Profit of post stop smoking treatment by acupuncture (complete recovered man) : health, home harmony, hygiene, profit.
19. Total judgement of efficacy: complete recovered(22.4%), good(5.6%), moderate(19.6%), slight(16.8%).
